  1. Peonies and Gardenias resemble each other because they have many  petals layered over each other.

    I do not think they are related.

    Peonies  can stay in the ground overwinter - very harsh winters like Canada  IF they are cut down in the fall and are well covered with mulch, they will bloom again in the spring - flowering in May and June.

    Gardenias need a warm to moderate temperature to grow in.
