If you're trying to get a checking account at a bank and you have a bad credit history, what are the odds that you can get an account there? Or do they even care?

  1. They usually do a soft inquiry. They don't really look too much into it unless you are also applying for Overdraft protection.

  2. The credit reporting system is the key to financial industry.  It determines how risky of an investment you are trying to make.  So, opening up a checking account might not be as risky as, buying a new house, car or asking for a personal loan.  It depends on what you're trying to do and how loyal of customer you are to that bank.

  3. Some banks check your credit and some don't. I had a friend that could not get a regular savings account at Bank of America, how she got one at Wachovia. You have to have extremely bad credit or have a record of bad check writing to get turned down for an bank account. I bank with Bank of America and I love it. You should have no problem if you've never written a bad check.

  4. Banks do not check your credit when you are opening a checking account. They will however do a soft check if you apply for an over-draft or a bank credit card.
