In Canada, they cost about $11, but sometimes you can get them for cheaper at other pet stores or in the newspaper

The cost varies depending on your location. I bought mine at Petco for 12 dollars, but it can range from $5-15.

Maybe you should try your local shelter. I have heard that Petco does not take very good care of its small animals, because most are bred to be sold to snake owners. I have a friend whose hamster was bought with cancer. I got lucky; my dwarf hamster was the best!

Personally, after reading up a lot on it, I would recommend a rat. Hamsters are great, but know that you are taking a gamble. Each hamster is different, and sometimes people end up with really mean hamsters. Mine was not like that...he didnt mind sitting in my hand, and didnt bite very much. Dwarf hamsters are known to bite a lot though.

This also depends on the induvidual, but on an average rats are smarter than hamsters. The gamble is better with rats.

BTW...you will need a cage, it would cost around 30$ i think.

Hmm...try to keep petstores as a last resort. Breeders/animal shelter are better also because the hamsters tend to have been given more affection and care as littluns.
