  1. Hi,

it depends on the type of hybrid, there are multiple levels of hybrid and let's cover the basics so you can make an informed decision-

    1. A full hybrid is able to move and run the A/C using electric power only drawn from a large nickel metal hydride (NiMH) storage battery. The internal combustion engine (ICE) does not have to start for either.

Think of the Prius, or any other Toyota or Lexus hybrid.

    2. A partial hybrid must have the ICE running to move the vehicle or run the A/C, even if the vehicle is idling. The ICE will shut off at stops if the A/C is not running.

There are smaller NiMH and electric motor generators than in a full hybrid and they are used to boost the ICE.

Think of the Chevy Tahoe Hybrid.

    3. A mild hybrid must have the ICE running to move or run the A/C and there is a very small electric motor generator that boosts the ICE. There may or may not be a very small NiMH.

Essentially the generator restarts the ICE after a stop to prevent fuel waste at idle.

    Think of the Malibu Hybrid.

So, you can buy a mild hybrid and get some benefit, but essentially they are more efficient standard vehicles.

A full hybrid like the Prius or Civic Hybrid will start in the $21-22,000 range. Check the manufacturer's websites.

You can obviously spend up to $70,000 or more for a very advanced luxury hybrid, but most are going to be in the low $20's to mid $30's, depending on what features you need and brand you want.

I need to address issues that have been brought up that are simply not true. I have posted extensively on these, so please do a search here in Answers or let me know for more specifics.

And, just for the record, I do not sell any vehicle or product for any company- even Toyota. I am an independent educator and that is all I do. No alterior motives here.

    1. It is a myth that a vehicle like a Prius costs thousands more than a comparible vehicle. The Prius is equal to a Camry, not a Corolla, in standard and available features, power, comfort, and advanced technology.

    2. It is also a myth that a hybrid produces more pollution than a standard vehicle. I have posted extensive details here in Answers about how false the "Prius/Hummer" environmental myth.

    3. A full hybrid like a Prius also has less moving parts and less parts in general than a standard vehicle, no matter who manufactures it.

    4. No matter what, a vehicle like the Prius will get substantially better mileage than any standard vehicle.

I maintain 51.7 mpg as a year long average here in the upper MidWest, where we are still in the 30's at night. That is simply by being careful how I drive and making sure I maintain my vehicle. No fancy tricks and no vehicle modifications.

    5. Consumer Reports, who enjoy knocking Toyota down a peg or two when they can, in their April 2008 auto issue, named the Prius the number one vehicle in owner loyalty for the fourth year in a row- 92% of owners said they would purchase one again or recommend one for purchase.

CR also said the Prius gets better mileage -44 mpg- in their long term tests than any other vehicle, even the Fit, Aveo, Yaris, or even other hybrids.

CR also reports that the Prius is the most green vehicle available, from production through operation and the life of the vehicle.

You will get the most benefit from these vehicles if your goal is a combination of reduced environmental impact, reduction of fuel use, and the most advanced vehicle for the money.

If that doesn't cover it, let me know and I'll be glad to answer any specifics.

  2. Actually, there are plenty that are less than 30,000 now.  Check out this web site.  It gives price ranges for each hybrid on the market now.

  3. Hybrid Toyota Camry starts around $25000.

  4. go to yahoo home page...to autos and click till u find some...toyota,,ford,,lexis,chevy,,honda

  5. Hybrids can cost anywhere from $22000 for a Honda Civic to $65000 for a Lexus. Just be aware that before you buy a Hybrid, that you will only be doing it for the environment, not for your wallet. The government used to give a hefty tax break but they no longer do. A hybrid on average costs an additional $4000 over it's non-hybrid model. To recoup that money, it would take some serious driving (30000/ year) or keeping the vehicle for more than 8 years driving normal miles.

Bottom line, if you are wanting a Hybrid to save money, you only will if you fall in the categories above. If you are doing it to save the environment, look at Volvos and Subarus. Both have a Neutral impact on the environment as from start to finish (production to demolition) they cause no impact on the environment. Also, Volvo's are 85% recycleable and 95% reusable.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

  6. $35,000 - $45,000
