You don't need a manager until you turn pro.  Before that, you only need a coach, which you get by joining a gym.  Your coach sets up your participation in amateur tournaments.  If/when you turn pro, your manager's contract will be based on a percentage.  If you have built up a real name as an amateur, you can hold out for a low percentage.  If you are a no-name, you might have to pay a manager as high as 50%.
