  1. Between $20 and $100 an hour depending on skill level and flatrate average. Best  mechanic job in the world. But it is not because everyone with a set of craftsmans can do it. SO__Work anywhere, walk in job application is a conversation with the shop foreman. You don't need 40 million in tools as the shop has to have all the special tools-not you. Once in a while you get to test a boat. Most marine mechanics will go out of their way to help you out. (least the ones I worked with) if your not some smart ***. Start out with old mercurys -they will teach you how to be exact and follow instructions exactly.Work in boats and you can learn anything- where as it is harder to learn "Not so hard" then "hit it harder". Biggest skill a marine mechanic has is patience. Got a temper-go work on cement trucks-they love being hit with huge hammers.

  2. According to Wikianswers 125.00+ an hour.  Not such a bad living if you can get a job.  Make sure to make alot of contacts in the marine community before or while you are in school.   They are not going to hire you just because you walk up and say, "hi, I just graduated, hire me."  Offer to work for free for a day or two so they can see what you can do.

  3. 25 dollars per hour,if you work for somebody if you work for yourself 100 dollars per hr

  4. Gotta agree with paultech, it is the poorest paying, hardest working trade going.  I've been messing with boats for 25+ years, and if i didn't have a love for boats and the water, i would be retired about four years ago.  As it is, I'll probably drop dead in the middle of a bellows job.  As for you, a first yr apprentice with no dealer school, at our marina, makes $14 per hr.  Top dog makes $29.

  5. Depends on your level.  My brother-in-law worked for Zodiac on the big container ships and made I think around $40K per year as a 3rd Mechanic (entry level).  He worked about 6 - 7 months a year with very little time off or vacation and then didn't work at all for the rest of the year.  You can make twice as much as a 1st Mechanic which requires at least a few years of experience and passing some tests.

This is kind of a dirty job, though, with poor conditions.  Illegal dumping of oil and chemicals is common, and the ship mechanic is the one who will be blamed if caught, even when just following orders.  As most ships sail under the Panama flag, you are not protected by laws or governments if injured or mistreated on the job.  My brother-in-law has worked with a lot of low-level people.  He worked with people who bought fake diplomas and had no idea what they were doing.  Smuggling counterfit money and who knows what else is also commonplace.

  6. Just retired from the worst lifetime of being a marine mechanic. I was in the business 28 years located in the pennsylvania/New jersey area. Most marina and boat yard operaters are the cheapest MFers in the business. . They dont give a c**p about employees and the conditions you work in..

The marine mechanics have been well behind in wages compared to automotive techs
