When people say moped they really mean scooters.  Mopeds are hard to find these days.

The chinese scooters can be bought for about $1000 (or even much less). But they will fail you in about 2 month (if it last that long).  The Japanese scooters (from Honda, Yamaha, etc.) will cost you about $1500 to $3000.  All motorcycle companies have their scooters on their website (with prices).

Depending on where you live, you may ONLY need a regular driver's license.  That you really have to check with your own STATE DMV.  Or just walk up to a scooter rider and ask.

Most small scooters (50cc) can get about 80 mpg.
