How much do nice wedding reception venues in NYC cost per head?

Places like Tavern on the Green, for example...Does anyone know how much places like these cost? Are venues in NYC even remotely affordable? How would I find out besides going there and making a fool of myself? I would hate to go there...look around...and then realize that the price isn't even close to what I can afford.

go and have a look...it wont hurt. then if they hand you a brochure and you realize its to much, still keep your smile & finish the tour. thank them for their time. tell them when you finish browsing you will be in contact. dress up, hold your head up high, and act like you can spend a million dollars :)

you won't be making a fool of yourself. When you contact  the different venues let them know your are looking at  different place and prices right now.

I don't think if you make a simple phone call to some of the venues you're considering, and ask them what on average their starting price per head is.  Have some basic info for them, approximate head count and general time of year, as well as if you're wanting a full meal or something more along the lines of heavy hor'duerves, buffet or sit down dinner, etc.  

I'm a bridal consultant in Kansas City, and had a bride get married in NYC at a very nice loft she found.  I think she said they paid something around $500 per head, and that was just the reception expenses.
