I just saw an ad in the paper that Pittsburgh was auctioning off police cruisers and some other municipal vehicles. How much do the cop cars usually fetch at the auction? What kind of shape are they usually in? I'd like to know if it's worth checking out.

  3. Here is some advice,

As a fleet manager I have sold many new police cars to various municipalities near where I was working.  I was also involved in coordinating the warranty work needed on these vehicles.

Unless your someone whom doesn't mind doing a LOT of maintenance and repairs on a car, I absolutely would not purchase a "retired" police vehicle.

Essentially they get the c**p beat out of them.  Even if they don't have a ton of miles on them, they were often in use 16 to 24 hours per day, six or seven days per week.

Many of the Crown Victoria's I sold developed transmission problems within a few months.  Not because there was anything wrong with the transmissions but because officers would set at a speed trap with the engine running, transmission in drive, with their foot on the brake, for HOURS on end.  After a while this tends to burn up the transmissions.  And this type of treatment was typical.

High speed chases, bent rims, suspension damage, not to mention all of the drunks that have thrown up in the back... not exactly what I would want to depend on for everyday transportation.

Municipalities auction off these cars for only one reason.  Buying a new police car is cheaper (and safer) than maintaining the old one.  That should tell you something.

    Hope this helps,

    Mark H.

  4. if they are crown victory surplus then like 3000 dollars

if its teh new impalas and they are being sold for some wierd reason, then maybe 6000 depending on how good the shape that they are in is.

if its like a constable of highway cops dodge charger, then depending on teh condition then possibly 10, 000 dollars

some times you can get really good deals, and with a little work and crown vic or an impala can be a reall strong car.
