i really want contacts for my birthday, because i don't want to wear my glasses anymore, i look really ugly in them and my friends and family say i look really prettty w/o glasses. except my mom won't let me get contacts! and im asking her if i can get them for my birthday, except my sister told me our insurance covers the price for our glasses every 2 years, and my sister was thinking about getting contacts, but since 2 years didn't pass yet, my mom said contacts will be expensive. but alot of my friends have contacts and they say it's not that expensive. are they right? and also how can i convince my mom in letting me get contacts?

  1. EXPENSIVE is a relative word. What is expensive for one person is not for another, so going by what "friends" say is not the best way to get going here. YOU do the research! Call your eye doctor and ask. You will have to have the normal eye exam, then the corneal evaluation for contacts and then the price of the contacts. All this depends on what sort of RX you have, so there are too many variables here for someone to give you a correct answer. See if your Doctor's office can check with your insurance company and find out what, if anything, that they cover. Write it all down. It can cost anywhere from $100-$400 depending on your Rx and the comlexity fo your specific type of fit and the kind of lenses you would need. Do the research first with your doctor. Once you know about what it would take then go to your mom and give her a plan to help earn half of the money and ask for gift certificates from your Doctor's office toward your contacts. If you show that you are willing to earn half of the money, she might be more inclined to let you get them becuase you are showing that you are mature and responsible enough to take some ownership of the problem of getting them. Something else you might want to understand is that they are a medical device that takes responsability. If you can not clean your room on your own, will you clean your contacts? If you can not do your homework on time, will you take your contacts out on time? If you can not follow your parents' and teachers' directions, you will not follow the doctors' directions either. So, these are things that a lot of parents do look at before they let a teen get contact lenses. So, make sure you can be responsible in other areas and you will have greater chances of winning your mom's heart in this. I bet you have a better chance if you take it from this angle! Good luck!
