It really depends on who they&#039;re working for, public or private sector.  On the private side, it obviously depends on what they&#039;re actually doing, but anywhere from ~20K to 100K or more for experienced machine operators.  On the public side, they probably start higher, but don&#039;t make as much as they can privately, maybe 30-75K.  The flip side is that the public guys have it a little easier than the private guys, since the government doesn&#039;t need to turn a profit.

This is why most street construction is being contracted out to private companies, since they can do the jobs for less than the public crews and tend to have incentives to finish on time.
