How much do taxes take out of my paycheck? And how do you find out how much the taxes are?

I make 8.25 per hour and work 5 days a week, four hours a day (part-time)...

therefore, I make $165.00 a week before taxes,

So I am wondering how much taxes will take of that money. I live in Virginia.

And also, how am I to go about getting this information for myself?

If you can help, I'd greatly appreciate it.

  1. Go to  paycheckcity.com and key in your info to get a very good estimate

  2. The best place to look is your state's Department of Taxation:

    http://www.tax.virginia.gov/site.cfm?ali...

According to the calculator, you'll be paying about $6 per pay check for state income tax.

Some states have other deductions on top of this.

As a rule of thumb, I always assume that 10% of my paycheck will go towards taxes and other deductions, and plan accordingly. I'm usually pleasantly surprised.

  3. It all depends on your state, and your income level.  In my state of California, there are 5 "payroll" taxes.  (These do not include sales tax, gas tax or special taxes on your utilities, etc...)

Federal: 10% to 35% (depending on income)

California State: 1% to 9.3% (depending on income)

    Social Security Tax: 6.2%

    Medicare: 1.45%

Disability .008% (depends on state's changing rates)

Generally, most people pay about 40% of their income to taxes.  I've included a link from the tax foundation below:
