I'll be in Rome for a while and I have to budget my money. So, how much do things cost? Just some random things that you could think of that I'll be buying......shampoo, soap, laundry detergent, different foods...ah, gelato, a winter coat (I'm still debating whether I should take one with me or just buy one there).....just things like that. Any help is appreciated, thanks!

  1. If you are on a budget then DEFINITELY bring a winter coat with you! Not only would it be more expensive to buy one in Roma, but remember the dollar is worth less then the Euro.

  2. I have a list of prices for some foods, which I picked out at the store for an American guy who wrote to me asking (I'm an American living in Rome, so here you go. The list is based on what I think an American would buy normally:

Prices are in Euros. a dozen eggs 2,44 Euros

    250 grams butter 2,19

1 liter milk (normal) 70 Euro cents - the special milks (you know, the kind with added fibre or vitamins), around 1,50 per liter

    Pork chops 7,20 per kilo

Texas steak - I think would be the equivalent to what the Italians call a Florentine steak, practically the best you can buy (very expensive!) 13,99 per kilo (I'm pretty sure beef is a lot more expensive here - fewer cows, less grazing land)

box of Allbran ((375 grams) 2,55

box of Granola type cereal with raisins and nuts (375 grams) 2,55

    Chicken 3,50-4,00 per kilo

Orange juice 1,23 per  liter or less depending on the brand

American coffee (filter) 250 grams 2,60 - a novelty here so possibly more expensive than over there.

    Italian essentials:

pasta, 1 kilo from 0,49 to 0,90 depending on quality

olive oil, 1 liter 5 to 13 Euros depending on quality

As for shampoo and soap, prices can go from about 1,50 Euros on up. I forget how much detergent cost...

Gelato is usually from 2,50 to about 4 Euros depending on the size of the cone.

A coat can cost anywhere between 120 Euros to about 300, obviously depending on the quality. Sales in Rome have just started and will go on till about the end of February.

I hope you have a nice time in beautiful Roma!
