  1. the green monkey has been retired so that was 16 million well spent. top horses generally sell in the hundreds of thousands of dollars range. but this depends on the sale. if he is already racing and a legitimate stakes horse it can be millions. a select sale has your better horses so they sell for more. a open sale has lots of horses and you can find a diamond cheap ( like xtra heat for $5,000 at the fasig tipton or real quiet for $17,000 at the calder sale)

  2. Top thoroughbreds sell for around $500,000 to maybe $2 Million!! It all depends on the bloodlines and the way the horse looks!!!

  3. At Keenland sales each year horses go for thousands up to over a million. Most of these are the the top of the thoroughbred crop for the year. Keenland is the top sale for thoroughbreds.

  4. what do you mean by top? horses sell for all kinds of prices - but THE BEST BREEDING costs a few hundred thousand to a couple of million. this does not mean the horse can and will run - people have gotten very lucky with a horse that costs a mere 20 to 30k - or a homebred..

    you can't buy heart

    or LUCK

  5. TO MUCH

  6. it varies from horse to horse. thier blood lines are important(like say they were selling a horse that was small in size but had a very good blood line he will be realy expensive)if you have another horse average size but not the greatest bloodline then he wont be as expensive.and if he is a stallion get ready to pay if he is a gelding get ready to pay but not as much.fillys are also the same in the bloodline area but still all top thoroughbred horses will be expensive not just in sale price but in feed a stall and if u want to race it then well get ready to pay top doller medical bills for shots, and to pay the jockey .and the groom and the trainer so it is very expencive.

  7. It depends on the age and s*x. Plus prior racing history. The average price would be about $17,000US. Most importantly are the bloodlines of the horse.

  8. The highest price paid to date was 16 Million plus for The Green Monkey ( bought as a 2 yo in training) who has YET to hit the track! Teuflesberg was purchashed for $17,000 I think. You have to be in the right place at the right time to get a bargain though.

  9. Many millions, depending on the horse's age, s*x, and racing or performance records. I find it interesting that every other answer given so far has at least one negative rating- why is that, I wonder?  Fasig-Tipton is the top seller of young thoroughbreds, and they have sales in Keeneland, yes, but have you forgotten about the HUGE sale that takes place each August at Saratoga in New York State? There have been record prices at that sale as well- and some of those horses have gone on to become legends in the racing world. ( Man'O War was one of the horses that was sold there as a yearling in 1918.)

  10. The best line I ever heard was from a friend of the owner of a horse who had been purchased at a two-year old sale for $70,000 and was going to run in the Breeder's Cup Juvenile later that year.  Somebody asked him about the relatively low price of the horse and the the guy's reply was "He doesn't know what he cost."

The horse's name?  Afleet Alex.  I think you may have heard of him.
