Get ahold of the January 2008 issue of TRAINS magazine -- it has detailed breakdowns of all the major equipment and track costs in American railroading.

One of the  biggest train builders in the world is Alsthom, a multinational electrical engineering company which provides, among other things, trains for the TGV network in France.

They employ 110,000 people world wide and have an annual turnover 0f $25 billion.

Hoghead hit it about right -- EMD's are going for about $1.75M per unit; GE's going for 1.5M.

But, do the manufacturers get that money?  NO, because all but one of the major RR [NS, CN, BNSF, CP, UP] broker their purchases through a leasing agent [and in the case of the GE's -- GE Credit is the lessor, they pony up most of the money and then soak the RR's for the rest with the lease payments -- and over 20 years -- some RR's are STILL paying lease payments on locos that were retired ages ago]

Stick with the Black Horse -- when they want locos, they go right to the source [London or Erie], tell them what they want and then ask if "They'll take a check"; yes, NS BUYS their locos outright.

Well, the big road locomotives, AC, 6,000 HP locomotives are running around $1,675,000 a copy, though I'm not sure that is the proper figure.  It is probably low.

How many are the building each month will get you a decent figure there.

Some of the rolling stock manufacturers like Thrall and Pacific Car and Foundry could be chased down to see what their yearly earnings are.  I don't know if these companies are publicly traded, however.

The company can charge a lot for each unit built--but the individual workers that actually do the building get paid by the hour. maybe a little more as they put years on the job--but probably 35 an hour plus benefitswould be normal.
