I have been living in USA for one year now, and I have always been interested in Dental programs. I have found some colleges that have short term dental programs now I am confuse between dental assistant and dental hygienist. I heard both are difficult and I dont know which one i can do it my english is not even perfect i have never worked before I dont know which one would be best for me. I was thinking to become a dental assistant when i learn more experiences then I can go for dental hygeinist but that way i will be wasting my time, to be honest i am more interested in dental hygeinist than dental assistant..Im just alittle bit worried about dental hygeinist what if i can't do it and give up in the middle of my studies..which one do u suggest me... just from ur ideas and experiences that u have and know about dental assistant and dental hygein..thank you

  1. I live in the Netherlands and will start my fourth year of Dentistry after the vacation.

If you are more interested in dental hygiene, go for it. Keep in mind that whatever you study, you have to go the full 100 percent for it. Dental studies are no joke, my friend.

I dont know how it is in the USA, but over here in the Netherlands loads of dental students have a job as dental assistens beside their education/studies.

  2. Dental hygenist generaly takes 4 years of study, there is chemistry, biology and other educational coursed involved. It might be difficult but it sure pays off. Dental assistants can study 1 year or less, in the state of Idaho as well as many other states you can become a dental assistant without prior experience. Dental assistants just need to know enough to help the dentist such as cleaning and settting up the room, using suction and water, as well as x-rays and other small things. If you apply in one of the states that dont require you to go to school they will teach you while on the job and then you will stop working, i personally know of 4 dental assistants in Idaho that started working without any experience or college education. If you like working with patients this is the way to go, good luck
