Question:

How much do you get paid as a trainee in a Top 10 accounting firm in London (excluding Big 4)?

For example, in Big 4 in London the pay scale is like this:

Year 1 - £27,000

Year 2 - £30,000

Year 3 - £33,000 (before exam qualification) and £37,000 + once exam qualified)

At the beginning of year 4 (if you stay on), the salary is approximately £45,000.

How does this compare with firms like Grant Thornton, Tenon, BDO etc? I have heard some people in the industry say that there is a large gap between trainee pay at big 4 and at the rest of the top 10, yet others say the difference is not so big.

Anyone at one of the non-big 4 firms care to share?

It would be much appreciated!!

  1. look on accountancy age website - it will give you all the answers you need.

  2. I am at a firm which is around 8-10th largest. On qualification you earn the same money.  First year is lower I would say.

You need to look at what you want from your training also, as Big 4 is different to smaller firms.  They are not all exactly the same, I would say medium sized offer more exposure to clients, and different areas of audit. But I have not worked for Big 4.
