How much do you get paid for babysitting a disabled child?

i've begun to babysit a family friend's two children. matthew is 12 years old and is severely handicapped. i am not positive of the exact title of his condition, but he can't communicate and he can't really do anything by himself. i change his diaper, feed him, take him out of his wheel chair when he wants to lay down, if he ever has a seizure i have to be there to make sure he doesn't hurt himself, and i'll put him to bed, which involves lifting him from the floor and walking down a long hallway to his bedroom. kaitlyn, his sister, is 10 and has no problems. she's not hard to entertain, she usually spends most of her time watching tv or on the computer.

i'm making 5 dollars an hour right now.

please leave thoughts as to if you think what i'm being paid is fair or not.

  1. well i'd sit down and talk with the parents and explain to them that you think you should get paid more due to the fact that you have more responsibilities than other children you babysit. tell them that you'd like to make $7 at minimum if that wouldn't be a problem for them. wait until you've been babysitting for awhile though.. some adults want you to earn your pay through experience. good luck.

  2. In PA, they have CCIS which pays for childcare services to enable parents to go back to work or meet community service guidelines set by welfare. They pay a flat rate, no matter what disabilites may be affected. They pay 17 dollars to daycares or a qualified sitter for an entire day(6-10) hours. And half that for a part time day. I think it depends on the family's financial situation more than anything. Are they paying a ton of medical bills with Matthew's SSI? If not, then it wouldn't be too unreasonable to ask for a bit more, if they are, then what your being paid is fine. Good luck!
