I was wondering what type of trains you would get paid the most. Also do you have to go to college. If so how long.

  1. The money is in freight, my man.  So is the future.

College is not required, but being able to read, write and retain at college level goes a long way to help in the learning process.

There are a few railroad "Academies," but they don't guarantee employment, and they are expensive (some run as high as $7,000).  I don't know that there are any hard numbers on how well these applicants fare against the "off the street" type hire.

Though the playing field has been levelled greatly over the years, some nepotism is still alive and well, so, if you know someone, your chances are better.

It's not rocket science, but it sure as h**l ain't out of a recipe book, neither.

Anyone who has visited this category regularly are aware of the rigorous demands of the service.  Personal life is a non-issue as far as employers are concerned, since it is of their opinion that a personal life and railroading as a profession are constantly at odds with each other, so, having the luxury to be able to pick and choose, they don't care about your personal life.  That has nothing to do with moving freight, which is the companies' only concern.

To some credit, they tell each prospect, in emphatically clear terms that they belong to the railroad.  Period.  To me, that doesn't make the abuse OK, but, being forewarned, if accepting the employment under these conditions, one shouldn't gripe 'cause the job's too tough.

Good benefits, uncomparable Railraod Retirment Benefits and the money is great.  They'll more than happy to beat ya black and blue with $100 bills.  But you'll earn it.

"What's that?  House burnt down this afternoon?  Gee.  That's too bad.  We got ya called for 02:15 for a north drag."

    And away ya go...

It has been said quite accurately and succinctly:  "It's a hard way to make an easy living."

But, it's still one of the best games in town...

  2. I make $350 per day, 7 days a week.

  3. It's a good living but a lousy life.

Actually not that bad, if you are willing to work nights, weekends, holidays.

I made close to $80,000.00 last year.

That's too much, I shoulda took more time off and went fishing LOL.

  4. Freight engineers make between $13  to  $40  an hour.  All depends on what type railroad you are operating on.  Class 1's make the most.  As for training most railroads have on the job training,  some hire from schools, and all will hire you if you have a engineers license from another railroad.
