  1. about

    $20,000 a year

  2. YEARLY

    hay:2,250

    board:2,400

    grain:240

    barefoot trim:480

    vet:300 (not including emergency)

    extra replacments:250

    shavings for winter and fall:120

    TOTAL:6040

  3. 6k per year.

  4. I don't own a horse, but I have made a budget, and it looks like it would cost me aprox. $3,364. My boarding is $30 a week though. Without boarding, it would be aprox. $1,804.

Feed for me would cost about $1,040 a year, and without feed AND boarding it would cost aprox. $400.

So say about $400 + food + boarding + bedding (if needed) and add in $500 emergency fees.

EDIT- a breakdown of that would be (all aprox.):

    Worming (DIY)=$84 a year.

Dental=$80 a year (that's for one dental check, could be up to three a year).

    Vet check/vaccination: $250 a year.

    Farrier=$350 a year.

Feed=$1,040 a year (giving a horse two flakes of hay a day and only hay.)

$500 emergency fee and say $100 for replacements and fixing up equipment.

  5. As you can tell it varies heaps. In my area board is heaps cheep. (however we pay for our own feed). At the moment i only have one horse in work. He generlly breaks for 8 to 10 weeks of the year. so:-

Food: about $2,300 (He is just on lucerne)

    Stableing:- $260

Vet:- $200 (however this doesn't include some calls i make that you abviousally cant predict or they wouldnt happen lol)

Farrier:- About $88 every 6 weeks, and i get him done about 7 times a yea (minus when he is out bush) so $616.

Tack:- is extreamly hard to estimate, but now that im all set up, with rugs and saddles etc, (and have been this way for 15 yrs) i probably dont spend any more than $300 a year. But like i said im already set up lol.

Younger horses will be more expensive with the vet etc as they will need  all their shots etc.

So all up for me its only about $4000, this is not taking into account the unexpected vet visits lol, they in my area rack the annual ammount up HEAPS lol. But other than that i get it extreamly easy at the moment as i only have one horse lol

    Hope this helps.

  6. Okay. :)

    This is ALL PER YEAR.

    Board: $2,400

Vet: $400 not including emergency calls (like when my horse runs into the wall...)

    Farrier: No Shoes - $675  ... Shoes - $810

All Grooming, First Aid, Misc. supplies - $300-500

There's probably more things that I'm forgetting.

  7. currently, I'm at 12,000 a year.

but i pay $750 for board.. which from what i hear is expensive (cheapest in my area...)

and I'm just north of Boston.

  8. idk i have a ranch and 6 horses but vet farrior and other i would say for 1 horse about $500-$800 a month

  9. Board- $300/month = $3600/year

    Shoes - $80every 6 weeks = $720 (just front shoes)

Vet - $200 on average, since I do my own vaccines, so its for Coggins test, teeth floating, etc.

    Vaccines - $60

    Chiropractor - $250

    De-Wormers - $80

Yearly total for just that stuff = $4910

  10. Boarding out in California can run anywhere from $100.00/mo to $1,000.00/mo depending upon the facility. IF you live in a populated city like San Francisco or Los Angeles, boarding close to home will more than likely run on the higher end. This provides stalls, cleaning, bedding and hay twice a day.

The lower end, is probably out in the rual areas and can be with hay or without (You'd have to go out twice a day and feed your horse (s).

I suggest that you call around to the boarding stables in your area and get rates and facilities (Does it have an arena, round pen, hot walker, wash rack, etc.).

The costs of shavings vary from place to place. In LA right now, a 5 cubic yard bag of shavings runs $4.00 from the shavings company and can run as high as $7.00 in a tack store. You also need sand, decomposed granite and sweet lime to keep your stalls bedded correctly. The sand and dg you'll have to call and get pricing on.

    Then there's the additional costs:

Hay in CA right now is running $17.95/bale for 3 strand alfafa which weighs 100LBs plus. Oat hay, runs a couple of bucks cheaper. Your horse will need between 5 and 7.5 bales a month, depending upon how easy a keeper your new horse is.

Shoeing (Which can run anywhere from $50.00 for just shoes in the front and barefoot in the back on up.) Done about every 6 to 8 weeks.

Trims: About $35.00 Once again done every 6 to 8 weeks.

Grain: Depending upon how easy a keeper your horse is, a bag of grain will run you about $15.00 and bran about the same, once a month.

Vet: Now normally without any accidents, once, twice a year for shots which run $40.00 per shot and the 'call charge' which can range depending upon your area from $40.00 all the way up to $250.00!

Misc. Tack: This is the one that not only can get expensive, BUT addicting! You see something that your horse just MUST have! DO NOT go to ebay! This can be VERY costly and addicting, trust me on this I have a friend who's still paying off credit cards from ebay horsey things she bought.

Having someone trailer or haul your horse with the cost of gas would probably be $2.00/mile nowadays...

  11. Well, 900 a month is bare minimum in my area. No services included.

    So multiply that by 12.......
