Just your portion/ per month / your age

I am 30 and did not choose a health plan at work because I think $170 a month for basic HMO is too much for a single healthy person. I used to pay $60 with dental and vision at my last job (which I know is really cheap). When I interviewed here they told me they had a great health plan. Well, guess what they lied! I will definatly be asking more questions about health insurance when I talk salary for my next position.

  1. HMO is $300 a month for medical, dental and vision coverage, $25 copay for an office visit, and a $300 deductible for inpatient care.

You can expect to pay $100 per month per person for full major medical coverage. I agree with you that $170 a month for just you is unreasonable. Cal a local BCBS agent and get a quote, if you are healthy and have no major health concerns, take no prescriptions, etc. you can do better with a private policy, but you should compare carefully, a cheaper policy could mean a larger deductible. Look at the deductibles and coinsurance on the group plan. If you are not healthy or have some major health concerns, you need to take the coverage on your job.

  2. You are foolish not to take that.  $170/month is a bargain.  One serious illness or injury and you will be REALLY sorry.

  3. I am also 30 and my premium is $390/month! Women of childbearing age are ridiculous. Luckily my employer pays 100% of mine, but I have to pay for my husband and 2 girls which costs me over $400/month. So in total for the 4 of us, it costs over $800/month. Ridiculous! They may not have lied that they have a great health plan, you usually get what you pay for. It's probably good insurance, but they also should've told you how much your part would be every month. Look into a private agency, you may be able to find something cheaper for yourself.

  4. $170 per month, for a 30 year old, is dirt cheap.  Clearly, your employer is also kicking in about $100 or so per month.

The reason you only paid $60 a month at your last job, was your employer kicked in MORE.

It is what it is.  For a healthy 30 year old, health insurance costs close to $300 a month for a low/no deductible plan.  If you're not healthy, private insurance can cost several times that, or they can refuse to insure you at all.

Our family plan, costs US, about $400 a month.  So my husband's employer is kicking in about $800 a month.
