How much do you pay gondola ride in venice, and how should the tip be?

That website might help you out a little.  The prices are a small bit outdated but not too bad.  I just came back from Venice a couple weeks ago and it was great.  

We paid 80 Euros for about a 40 minute ride.  We went around 5 p.m.  If you want to go under the moon (more romantic) it will cost you about a minimum of 100 Euros.  

Don't tip - it's not expected.  You just pay the gondolier and he gets the entire sum you have given him.  You are not expected to tip and you've already paid a large sum for the ride.  If you want a musician on the gondola to serenade you, you'll have to pay about another 40 Euros.

Before the ride, decide if there is any specific area you want to be taken.  If so, make sure you negotiate that ahead of time.  I'd recommend asking to be taken down some of the smaller side canals rather than the main area.  

If you're in Venice and really want to spend the money on a gondola ride, go for it.  We did and it was great.  However there are cheaper alternatives.  There is a boat called a "traghetta" that is almost exactly the same as a gondola.  It just goes across the canal taking people from one side of the canal to the other.  This is a bargain - it will only cost 1.50 Euro.  It will give you a (short) gondola experience with substantial savings.

To see Venice, buy an all day Vaporetta pass.  The Vaporetta is their public transportation - a boat.  It travels all day and late into the night.  You can buy an all day pass for 15 Euros and hop on and off all day.  Stand around at the back of the boat until a seat becomes available out on the back deck.  Then sit down and enjoy the scenery and take lots of great pictures from on board.
