id say 5 pounds as it seems alot of money to them. and when they get in their teens then about 10 pounds.

Couple of things to consider:

1) Closeness of friend.

2) If you have kid(s), do they get gifts from the same person you are gifting

2a) If so, how much?

$20 to $25 is good.  If the person is a close frend then go a little higher.  Don't go over $50 though.
