  1. Whether you have a Xbox 360, PS3, whatever, for a descent but cheap sound system check out the Pioneer HTS-GS1. From what I've heard from others you get pretty good sound quality for only around $120 at Wal-Mart.

  2. There are so many different considerations when buying a stereo system. If you don't have one right now then you can probably buy a theatre-in-a-box from Wal-Mart and be quite happy, I was for years upon years.

However, I happened to inherit a pair of Dayton Wright loudspeakers from my uncle and when I hooked it up to a good, $300, receiver I was absolutely blown away. I never would have spent the money on them because I couldn't conceive that there would be THAT much of a difference, but when I popped in The Matrix for the first time after installing the speakers and receiver I almost cried it was so beautiful.

So, in short, if you are looking for a gateway system then you can certainly go with a Wal-Mart $120 box set and you'll probably be happy, but if you've got the money then I'd invest in something more substantial, like in the $1000 range at least.
