  1. There are two types of upgrade: if you have an Advance ticket for a particular train and choose to travel on an earlier one, you will be charged the standard single fare, which is £71, less the price you paid for the Advance ticket, whatever that may have been, plus £10 admin fee. If you missed the train for which your Advance ticket was issued, you'd have to pay the £71 single fare with no consideration for what you'd paid for the Advance ticket. Advance tickets are strictly quota controlled and are only valid on the train shown on the reservation.

If you were thinking of upgrading to first class with an Advance ticket, it can't be done: you'd have to pay the full first class fare of £139. If you were upgrading from a standard open single to first class it would be best to do it on the train:

there are only twenty six first class seats on CrossCountry trains via Leeds and they are usually reserved, so if you upgraded at the booking office you'd probably be standing at least as far as Birmingham. If seats were available in first class you would be charged the difference between first and standard singles, i.e. £68.

  2. Upgrade??  do you mean to first class  little point really as you have reserved seating  anyway and it you dont like that go in the quiet coach..normally the rear one of the rake

You will loose out on your cheap travel instread of your 28 quid ticket you maybe charged £124.80 I think is the correct  full price single fare
