  1. I think it is absolutely crucial to play 3 balls ahead in 9 ball. Getting position is very important and if you get out of line a lot you have little chance of doing well. The better you plan your rack positionally the easier it becomes. If you don't you end up having to come up with a lot more difficult shots.


  2. I agree with dj.  If you get out of line, you either have to come up with an amazing shot or maybe change your plans and play a safety, conceding the table to your opponent.  I think it's much easier to string a run together thinking 3 balls ahead, but I have seen lesser skilled players do it without knowing what they were doing, just coming up with the good shots when they needed them, they're just not as consistent.
