Question:

How much do you tip your hairdresser?

Hey ladies!

I usually get highlight and low lights, and then on another visit get the haircut.

My hair is extremely thick and very long (Think Jessica Simpson, but mine is real!!!) My stylist always uses a few fancy products to polish my hair, gives a great 5 minute scalp massage, and completes the look with a blow dry. The color today cost $102....

I am a college student on a restricted budget, but give me an idea on what you would tip? Once I pick a best answer, I'll reveal what I actually left!!!

Thanks

  1. i give $25 for my $20 haircuts and $105 on my $90 haircut/highlight.  we're all on restricted budgets but i figure if i can swing $90 for highlights (something that is not a necessity) i can leave a decent tip. Though I just realized that thats less than 15%...usually i leave 20.

I would probably have left $120 if I were you, just to round it off.

  2. Since the quality of service isn't in question then you should be tipping 20%.

I am not trying to be mean or anything of that sort but you asked for opinions.

I understand that you are a college student on a restricted budget, but really how restricted can it be if you are able to spend that kind of money on your hair. This is great if you can afford it but you shouldn't use your budget as an excuse not to tip properly.

A good rule of thumb is that if you can't afford to tip properly then you can't afford the service.

If you tipped 20% then Bravo!

  3. If she takes good care of your hair, I'd say 20%.

So for today, you should have left her about $20-$21.

    Regarding your thick hair;

It really depends: did they charge you more than they would charge another customer because it's thick?

If yes, then a 20% tip would be good…

If not, then I think you should have given her a little bit more since she spent more time and effort on your hair… like at least $25.

  4. I used to go blond but recently changed it to a medium golden brown.  She colored my hair and added a glossing treatment.  It came to $120 (I also have very thick, long hair).  Because it's very time consuming and takes much more dye for my hair, I also tip more than my friends.  I left her $25...my friends think I'm crazy but she did a good job and was very patient with my unruly hair!
