  1. Good question.

As stated above, earn your degree but make sure you keep your options open.  What I mean by that is feel free to earn your degree in a secondary interest such as management.  Thus, if you for some reason become a diabetic, loose an arm or an eye you will have something to fall back on.

I have been flying for a little over eight years and am now a pilot at expressjet which is a regional airline.  After flight instruction, this is the best gateway for a major airline.  Regional start you off at around 24K a year, not enough to live on, and in my opinion and poor life style because you are on reserve (call).  When you make CAPT expect around 55K or so a year, so it just gets better.  However, when you switch to a major such as Delta, you will drop down to 36K or so for the first year.  But the sky is the limit from there.

BTW, embry guys get made fun of all the time!  Not that they are not good pilots, but when I hear story's about cocky FO's they are mostly embry guys.  DO YOUR RESEARCH, this is very expensive career and one that seems to never end i.e. medical certs, chart updates, yearly training......  GOOD LUCK!

  2. One thing is you don't have to get a 4 year degree to be a pilot. Many of them major in something else and get their ratings/liscences on the side. this way, you have something else to fall back on as security.

the best site I have seen for this info is:

It answers both of your questions.

    Cheers!
