  2. This one says that it is free as well.

  3. ACK!  Do NOT look into k12freehomeschool!!!  It's a scam, IMO, and run by the woman who started Grace Academy, Morningstar Academy, etc.  She has had several failed virtual schools and been in trouble with the legal system.  Her site is NOT the same as K12, Inc.  She uses marketing practices that make people think she's the same thing.  K12's legal department has gone after her.

On to your question.  While it's true a K12 virtual school is "free", there may not be an option in your state.  People assume "they're in every state".  They're not.

Here are the links you need:

Okay, so you want "full time" for 2nd grade.  I assume this means all six courses?  There is a 10% off sale this month for new subscribers, but I'm not figuring that in to the prices below.

    Here is the cost breakdown:

    OLS subscription, 6 courses, 1 year:  $1128

Materials costs, 6 courses (for basic materials, not all):  $264

(this assumes all 2nd grade courses)

    Materials shipping:  $60

Activation fee:  $50???  (not sure on current price)

So that's a minimal total of $1502, without the sale, and without any additional materials such as the student or teacher pages, or the upgrade kits (mostly books you can get at the library).

If you wish to only do four courses at a time, you can make it cheaper by having a 4-course contract.  You'd keep LA and Math loaded all year, but you'd do History & Art in "semester 1" and then Music & Science in "semester 2".

You can also find used K12 materials on the K12 Used Yahoo Group.  There are other sources, too, such as auction sites, or PaperbackSwap.com.

I recommend you join the K12 Users Yahoo Group for more input:

I've used K12 for over five years and we LOVE it.  I think it says a lot when a HS family has stuck with the same curriculum year after year ;-).

I also recommend you attend one of the free, online information sessions:

  4. K12 Virtual Academy cost $0, it's completely free and approved by each state that its in. They send all the curriculum to you. 6 course in all and it's an awesome program. You have to have the internet. You also get a free loaner computer and printer if needed. Because it's run by the state you are considered a public school student and you are accountable to the state. The program on-line is made easy to really help the parent in preparing the lessons. You can also get a tour on-line with a person walking you through if you have the internet. But you do have to check out K12.com I think it's great!!!

    Good Luck,

    Anna~
