  1. First of all,  it is usually an option to have your gums numbed up so you feel nothing.    It would depend on if you need a regular scaling,  or a deep scaling,  sometimes called a root planing.   This is where the plaque and calculus are already formed pretty hard beneath your gums and the only way to get it off is for the hygienist to go under there and scrape it off with a special instrument.   This will leave you a bit sore afterwards,  but if you get numbed up,  it won't hurt a bit while they are doing it.

    So-  regular scaling,   not uncomfortable

Deep scaling-  a bit more touchy,   much better with anethesetic

  2. You should be numb during this procedure, so you won't have much pain.  After the numbness wears off, you may have a little discomfort for a day or two following.  It shouldn't be painful, but your gums will be sensitive.  Avoid eating crunchy or sharp things like tortilla chips, and your dentist will probably recommend a mouth rinse or warm salt water rinse.  And of course, if you have any other questions I'm sure your dentist would be happy to answer them!  Good luck!
