I busted a hose on my radator (which I didn't know at the time) so I left the car until I could get it towed away. When I returned someone had stolen my cadillac converter out of my car (which again I found out later). How much does one cost? What should I do? And, should I report it to the insurance company being as though the parts and the macanic work would probably be outragous? Please help me I really don't know much about cars and I don't want to get taken buy an auto part. Thanks

  1. I thought that it was a catholic converter?  No, it's a catalytic converter.

The cost varies by make and model.  It's extremely weird that only that one part was stolen.  If you report it, it's going to have 'fraud' flags all over that claim.

  2. It's not that weird.  Criminals are stealing catalytic converters for the value of the metals inside them, metal prices are at an all-time high.  Definitely report it to the police.  They will probably tell you that a whole bunch of converters have been stolen.  Nobody steals ONE catalytic converter.  There's a crime ring there, and somewhere a scrap dealer is working with them.

Insurance will deal with fixing it, go with one of the shops they recommend.

  3. What model and year of your caddy?

  4. Hard to believe someone stole a catalytic converter but if they did report it first to the police and then to your insurance company.  Insurance won't pay without a police report

  5. It's a catalytic converter, and they are expensive since they contain precious metals (platinum) which is why people steal them.  You insurance probably won't cover the loss, but call and ask to make sure.

Generally parts alone will set you back $300 to $500
