I checked comcast.com and found nothing on their website about it.

  1. If you go through Comcast and you want their DVR,  you have to be a premium cable customer.  Basically the type of customer that gets a digital cable box in their home.  From there you have to call Comcast and ask them because I am not one of their premium customers.

However, it might be cheaper in the long run, since you have to play a c**p-ton more for the premium packages with stuff you will probably not even care to watch, if you just get a TiVo.

TiVo is around $15 a month depending on how long you commit to the service, and you can usually find they are doing a mail in rebate on the device so you do not have to pay for the TiVo box.

I looooove my TiVo and would much rather have basic cable and a TiVo than free DVR and a bunch of channels that are going to waste.

  2. You can get a really good DVR (digital video recorder) for about $100.00 (US). Remember a DVR is just a VCR that uses a disk instead of tape. Most have schedule makers for the shows you want to record. All can record using Rewriteable DVDs (DVD +/- RW), Maximum rewrite times are about 10-12 times before they are not usuable. Some of the more expensive DVRs come with hard drives (thus making them like Tivo), but without the service, or expense.

If you want to be able to record just your favorite weekly shows onto disk and don't mind changing disks or programming the recorder and (cable), then you don't need tivo or a hard drive.

    Good Luck!
