What's the typical loaded/unloaded weight of a hopper/tank/super tanker barge? What about the average weight of a towboat/fleet boat?

  1. you have to know the length and beam and that will tell you the weigh in most cases. that Ill gave you the general tun age.

  2. Depends on the size of the Boat or Barge. The Tugboat I am on is 120 feet long and is 215 gross tons. The barge that we always have with us is 480 feet long and weighs 8722 gross tons light or empty, it holds 145,000 barrels of petroleum. So the question you are asking has many variables depending on the boat and barge. Hope this helps.

  3. most river hopper barge have a light ship weight of 280 short tons (2000 lbs per short ton) up to 310 short tons.  depending on the size.

most river barges are 35 ft wide and have length of 195 ft or 200 ft.  the depth of river barges vary, 11 ft up to 14 ft.

the amount of cargo loaded depends on the draft they can load to.

typically we call a 9ft draft to be about 1500 short tons, but this depends on if the barge is 195 ft or 200 ft, and if it is a rake barge or a box barge.  box barge hold more cargo at a given draft than a rake barge does.

go to barge info and then look around for the equipment register whish will give you dimensions and a tonnage scale for various drafts of ACBLs fleet of barges.

    good luck!

++ after clicking on the 'equipment register' type in barge 'ACBL500' and this will give you the dimensions and deadweight table for this barge.

standard (195x35 or 200x35) hopper barges have a light draft of 1ft 6 to 1ft-10 inches; not 3 ft as mentioned below.

  4. How much does a car weigh? A truck? A fire truck? A House? A Horse? Same thing. Depends on the size and the load and there's a lot of variance.

  5. Don't know as they don't make the weighing scales big enough to sit one on.

  6. Michael, a typical coal super barge that plies the Ohio and Mississippi Rivers is 195x35 feet and draws about 3 feet empty. So, it displaces 20475 cu ft of water, which  would weigh 1,278,190 pounds.

There are thousands of these barges in use today. A gasoline barge would have roughly the same dimensions and would weigh around 15% higher, due to the baffels, and plumbing.

Towboats vary a lot in size and weight due to their mission.
