average is 21k a year, not a good job, to the person above me, do some research, if driving a bus payed that much, you wouldnt have people who look like they live below the poverty line driving....

In my school which is in a rural Arkansas setting bus drivers are paid $24.20 per trip. The trip being defined as picking everyone up in the morning then dropping them off in the afternoon. Though field trip drivers are paid $7.50 and hour and paid for their daily trip if they miss it. It really is poor pay. I can say that 95% of the people who drive the buses are people who already work/teach at the school. The other 5% are the people who have retired from working/teaching at the school and leave practically next door to the school. I don't know about other states but in Arkansas schools have to post the wages of all faculty in a public manner. Many choose to post it on their website. You might want to keep in mind when applying to a position at a school they run background checks and take your prints. So if you have much of a record I wouldn't count on the job.
