  1. Rome's cruise terminal is just over an hour away, so probably a lot.

Its best to do a tour for Rome, that way you won't miss the ship (like a bunch of people did on the last cruise I went on).

  2. I have cruised the Mediterranean and did a port stop for Rome.  You need to know that the cruise ship port for Rome, Civitavecchia, is a good hour or more from Rome by bus, train or taxi. So its not like you can walk off the ship and find a taxi and or tours of Rome. You can if you are adventurous and want to take a chance book your own Rome tours on line and then take a taxi, bus or train to Rome. BUT, since Rome is a long way off you had best know what you will be doing, how long it will take, and also give yourself plenty of extra time to get back to the port, or you will miss your ship. That is the one place where I would not recommend going on your own.

An option that you may want to consider for Rome, which was offered on our cruise ship (Royal Caribbean) was a "on your own" tour which was essentially a two way bus ride to/from Rome and they dropped you at a location where they would pick you up at a designated time.   You should check to see if your cruise ship is offering such an option.   I don't know what a taxi fare would be but I am sure that a bus or the train would be cheaper because the taxi driver is going to charge you for a two way trip that would be like driving from DC to Philly and back,  a long way.

If you still want to go on your own, here are web sites where you can book a taxi/limo/van transportation to/from Rome.  The web sites will have the fares. Here's several web sites for Rome tours and transportation: http://www.vatican-tours.com/?gclid=COCt...

If you would like to take the train to Rome, here's a web site that you can search:

There are trains from the port to Rome all morning and they all seem to take a little more than an hour:
