  1. about $100 from the pet store. marshall ferrets are good. females must be fixed or they will die if they dont breed after their first cycle.  they can be kept in a large cage, but they need alot of time to run round the house.  they can go outside, but must be very closely monitored.  they dont like leashes and can wiggle out of a collar.  they need to be able to run around the house for at least 5 hours a day.  they do best with companions.

  2. California:  it's illegal to own or sell them.

Funny, then, that a lot of pet shops here have aisles of ferret paraphernalia.

Well I started with one ferret who came with her ferret nation cage (worlds best ferret cage and vet recommended) and accessories. everything cost $250 So then I got another ferret 2 months later at a pet store she cost $150 Lots of toys accessories and treats and litter in between. The second of this month I got another ferret his is now a 12 week old little boy he cost $150 as well from the same pet store so since the month of September when I got my first ferret to now I would say the costs have came to about $1,700 Shots for me were $15 for distemper and $15 for rabies. The best foods to feed are either Inovva EVO Ferret or Zupreem. I personally feed the ferret store original formula but plan to switch soon to either of those foods. I'll give you links to things.

This toy looks fun but it is dangerous and expensive. We had 2. They are easily destroyed and cause a hazard for intentinal blockage if swallowed which can be fatal. I posted a reveiw on the site. It is the second reveiw.

I ended up buying a non- perforated corrugated tube. It cost me $4.49 from home depot for a 10 ft tube here is a pic of what one looks like. They are indestructible to ferrets. I washed mine out really good with the hose outside to get the factory dust off and out of it. Then let it dry

Some can be walked on leashes if they let you but i don't anymore after one of mine got really sick from it. She caught a bacteria off the concrete called clostridium. I had to pay $149 for a fecal exam and perscription.

  4. For the ferret itself - about $100 to $150 (in US pet shops), a private breeder could be more or less, and a shelter ferret usually has a $50 to $75 adoption fee. Keep in mind, there's A LOT more expenses involved with keeping a ferret. The ferret is going to be the cheapest thing. A good cage will be at least $100 (I paid about $200 for the 2-story Ferret Nation cage), good foods are going to be about $15 to $20 per bag, litter can run $10 to $20 (I pay $13 for the 4 cubic foot bag of Kaytee Aspen bedding), and then there's also toys, bedding, and vet bills (and exotic vets cost more than those for cats and dogs).

US pet shop ferrets will already be neutered and descented. If you get one that hasn't been neutered, then I suggest having it done around 6 months of age (some say to wait as late as 9 months for females and 12 months for males). Early neutering is thought to be a cause of a lot of illnesses, so don't have it done before 6 months of age. As for descenting, it's really not necessary and can be a very harmful procedure. It's actually illegal in some European countries because they consider it to be a cruel and unnecessary procedure. Don't do it unless medically necessary.

Yes they can walk on leashes, but not all will like it and don't expect them to become leash-trained like a dog. How long really depends on your ferret and the weather. Obviously if it's really hot out, you don't want to have the ferret out for too long. I took one of mine for a walk in the evening and he walked four blocks up and then back again and I think he could've kept on going after that! Just make sure the harness is on properly so your ferret can't escape while walking and watch for other animals.

How to best raise them - I'm not quite sure what you mean by that. Mine are kept in a cage in my bedroom, but as long as I'm home, they have free roam of my room (and only my room). They get at least 4 hours of out-of-cage time every day. The room is completely ferret proof, so they can't get hurt. I also provide them with plenty of toys to keep them entertained - blankets, tunnels, balls, stuffed animals, a dig box (storage tub filled with uncooked, non-instant rice), etc. I also regularly switch their toys so they don't get bored. They get fresh water twice a day, their litterbox is scooped twice a day and thoroughly cleaned once a week, I do daily spot cleaning in their cage and thoroughly clean it and all bedding in it at least once a week. I feed them a mix of cat/kitten and ferret kibbles that are high in meat protein, low in carbs, and grain free. I bathe them once or twice a year, trim their nails weekly, brush them a few times a week, clean their ears once every one to three months (depends on the ferret, some need it more often than others and they also do a good job of keeping each other's ears cleaned), and brush their teeth once a week.

    Hope that helped!
