You can buy home projectors that are meant to display movies and TV for about $600 - but they are no where near as good as a movie theather... the projectors being used in a theater cost upwards of $40K each... the closest you will get is a high-end home LCD projector that will run you bout $1500 - it will look very nice, trust me.

Movie Theaters actually don't always have great picture quality. So, like everything else it depends on how you define "as good as".

A 1080p projector can be had for as little as $1500 (with a current $500 rebate in the US) -- see reviews at the links. Or other models can cost much more.

Add a home made screen for about $100 and you can have a picture as good as some movie theater's for under $2000.

I think about $2000, though prices have dropped a lot, you might be able to find a really good one even lower priced then that.

If you want  a great projector look at a runco.  They are some of the best out there right now.  There really good 1080p projectors will run you about 17,000, but its worth it.  And If you really want it to look like the movies then look into an anamorphic lense to go with it.
