  1. believe it or not, kindergartners have to learn quite a bit to pass to the first grade.  they have to recognize shapes and numbers, spell and write their names, be able to write on the line, good attention skills, know how to get on the computer, be able to count to 10 or more, quote the abc's and recognize each letter, be able to pronounce each letter, read a complete sentence- the list goes on and on! These days, school expect children to come in already knowing how to do alot of stuff!  And your child will be tested frequently during the school year to identify if he is able to do the work and how much he has learned! I've seen a many of children have to repeat kindergarten due to severe behavior problems, or slow learning.  if you need more advice, email me.

  2. At this young age they learn more through playtime. Society continues to push kids more and more and somehow they end up graduating knowing less and less, coincidence? I think not.

At what point does a child get to be a "child"? They have done studies on waiting to teach concepts to children and when done so, they grasp the concept much better and retain it longer. Why? Because their brains are more developed, their attention spans are longer and they have a basic understanding of the need to learn.

Should we teach them nothing, of course not. Teach them through play. By singing silly songs they are learning how to form consonant/vowel blends, learning how to follow along, how to follow a rythmn, learning how to use their imagination and so much more. Learning is not just reading from a book or knowing their alphabet, it is also knowing how to focus, share, sit at a table, work in a group, vocalize ideas, follow instruction, copy from a board, hold a pencil correctly, speak in sentences and so much more.

  3. My guess is that he would learn more with you than in the school.   If you homeschool him, you can teach him what you think he needs to know by whatever deadline you want to give him.

  4. I think that your son is learning things its just he doesn't show it. If you  are really conserend about your son then you should have a meeting with the teacher and ask her what she has been teaching and how your son has been acting at school

  5. in   K~ they should know basics like name, age, color, shapes, and some basic words like tree, run, fun easy three letter words if he or she knows how to spell the small words this is a great  start

  6. Depends on the school, really.

Some are quite academic and expect children to be reading by the end of kindergarten.  This, of course, is nonsense.

Other schools focus more on the play aspect of learning, cooperating with others, following directions, sitting still...so they can plunge right into sitting still at a desk or table in first grade.

You might want to check with your school to see what their expectations are.  Most schools now have websites outlining their curriculum expectations for each grade.

But again, this varies greatly from school to school.

    Be well.

  7. I'm sure your son is learning something, it's difficult to see learning take place sometimes.

1/2, full or none, kids will learn about the same.

    Good luck :D

EDIT:  Children learn from play, they need time to explore the world and how they fit in it.  Play is very underrated, please don't discount it.

  8. writing there abc, read easy books, talk english, and making friends
