  1. you can get one for 4-5 dollars at walmarts....just plug it into the jack!

  2. Generally basic unlimited local service is in the $15-$25/month range.  Contact your local telephone provider (Verizon, SBC, etc depending on where you live) and they can tell you exactly how much and what you get for that price.

  3. You can ask your landlord which companies other tenants in your building go through for landline telephone service. Or if you have a phonebook handy, check to see who issued it and call up that company to see if they can service you (all they need is your address to look up in the computer whether they can take you on as a customer or not). Chances are, persons who occupied your apartment before you had service setup, so your address should be in their system already.

I have Verizon here for landline service, and in my view, it is rather expensive. Costs probably vary by area, but for my apartment, it was almost $60.00 for a one-time setup fee and around $24/month for BASIC phone service (i.e. no caller-ID, no call waiting, no voice mail, etc.) + tax, of course. I have been told that it is about average, but it still seems high to me! :(
