How much does a massage therapist typically make?

i have been considering the field for quite some time. i checked on payscale.com and got a general rate, but i wanted to know a real person's pay rate. thanks.

  1. Most of the info on those career sites are wrong as most massage therapists start their own business and that info isn't counted there.  Also, most only work part time as it is hard to physically work a full 40 hour work week.

    Entry level jobs at massage franchises pay $12-$20 an hour and they only pay that when you are doing a massage. It is usually minimum wage when you aren't doing a massage.

    Even though massage therapists can charge on average $60 an hour - you don't really ever make that as there are office expenses and the expenses of running the business.

    You can make as little or as much as you want if you have self confidence, business training (even if you get a job) if you are motivated, committed and love to learn new things and work with people.  It is really more about learning to take care of yourself than helping others.

    Massage therapists who make $100,000 a year go beyond their training and charge more per hour and often hire others to work for them.


  2. when working for yourself, people generally charge a dollar per minute. this doesnt include down time though when ur still at work.....so its kinda hard to say.  it really depends on the setting u want to go into
