I am thinking about buying Slickcraft 28' boat to rehab, but the engine is supposed to be shot. I know that it I might be able to get the current engine repaired but want to get an idea of a worst case senario of what it might cost. There is also some of those black mildew stains on the hard plasitic coverings/deck anybody have any tips on how to remove them? I know it will take a lot of work which is what I'm looking for but need to get an idea on cost....atleast if floats, it's listed on other sites for about 28,000 and I might be able to get it for under a grand.

  1. Totally depends on the size of the motor that your looking at,,as far as black mildew ive used Fantastic cleaner and seemed to work great

  2. a new engine will run you about $100 a horsepower

  3. If the boat uses an engine and it is an inboard outboard you can possibly get a every economically engine for it, call rebuilt engines for cars and 1 ton trucks and see what they advise. A 28' boat can use a 300hp engine with not much a problem. See the rating for it.

  4. You need to go back with a marine engine. Putting an automotive engine in your boat will possibly get people killed! The block itself is basically the same but the componets like the starter, solenoid, alternator and other electrical and fuel related items MUST BE MARINE RATED.

I cannot stress this enough. Those electrical parts are sealed against spark so fumes will not ignite in engine compartment.

As far as an engine goes talk to a local marine tech about rebuilds. There will be a core charge for your old block but it is tons cheaper than a new one. I just replaced a 454 Merc long block a few months ago with a rebuilt one and it ran the customer 2500 with a return on his block. Granted I swapped all his stuff from the old one to the new one. If you plan to do this make sure all componets stated above have USCG stamped on them.

  5. You really need to tell us what kind of engine is in there now, as there are many different possibilities.

What you would want is a "new" factory rebuilt engine, not a totally brand new engine.  These are completely rebuilt, and are basically a new engine at a lower cost, and come with a warranty.  For a car-type engine, such as a GM 350, you're looking at about $2,500 for the engine, plus the cost to intall it, and have the old one taken out, $800-$1000, roughly.  I think you mean inboard engine, when you said inline, although there are inline engines, but not too common in boats.

Make sure if you do this that you are gettin a Marine engine, not a standard car or truck engine.  They are built to higher standards to keep up with the stress they are put under, and other parts, like power steering, alternator, water pump, all need to be marine too to last longer.

  6. if its a 305 or a 350 they are very common can pick one up for couple thousand dollars ready to install.

  7. A boat is a hole in the water to put money. Look at a new heat exchanger too. $10,000.

  8. Likely a GM straight six or a Ford. Pretty common for parts internally. Check the side of the casting for numbers. It is basically an automotive block and most mechanics can work on it. Marine specific items include: Exhaust manifold...Carb and flame arrestor and very little else.

    Mildew...Tilex or Mean Green.

You can get a crate engine from a rebuilder for under 5K and bolt up to your gearbox and exchange the marine parts.

A new marinized engine will cost you about 10K for the power you want.

    Good Luck.
