  1. it is always cheaper to raise your own pig ,

but have you got the space

pigs are sold by weight and you can already eat them when they are piglets

the can grow huge .and then eat about 2 buckets of slop

    ,wet food ,per day

when they are very small they eat the same as a dog and you can feed them on left overs ,

but soon they need half a bucket a day

they also need space to keep clean ,the best way is in a field,

in pens you have to go there daily to clean them ,too much work.

the problem is that they are as intelligent as a dog and a lot of people grow to like them ,and then have problems with killing them later.

  2. 2.50 a # for bacon

  3. Around here,  in central NY, the average price for a piglet is $40-55.  They will eat most anything but you can suppliment with  hog/pig feed.

For around $15 you can get  50 pound bags of food, but if you also have a vegetable garden pigs will happily eat any extras you have along with other food.  You just don't feed them table scraps for the last 2-3 weeks of their lives so that their meat will have a better taste.

It might be cheaper to buy an adult pig, but with raising your own you get a better idea of what has gone into your piggy and have control of what happens to it.  You can't beat the taste of your own raised pigs, either, it's much better than from the supermarket :)

  4. That really depends on how much she eats and what she eats. Unless you enjoy raising pigs I would just go ahead and buy the meats from the store. And how could you bring yourself to slaughter a pig you raised and talked to every day?

  5. In what form Joints, chops or bacon.

  6. they range from what they are needed for some are used for breeding(males)some to slaughter they range from 250-450

  7. The great thing about a pig is that it eats almost anything, so feeding one is not a problem. The issues erupt when it comes to not becoming attached to the little guy;

Dogs look up to you and cats look down on you but pigs, pigs look at you as an equal!

If you have a lot of kitchen scraps, (perhaps even collect from the neighbors?), then it might be cheaper to raise one.

An adult pig will be cheaper, but it means cleaning it and butchering it yourself, or paying a butcher and getting nearly the same price for it as you would if you just bought the meat. A nice easy way is a spit braai!
