How much does a single bet change the odds on a horse race?

For instance, if there was a horse that opened at 4:1 and I were to place a Win bet of $100k on him, how much of a change would I expect to see? Meaning what odd would he "go off" at?

  1. Well, I'm not sure how much your bet will be but its all relative to the size of the pool, in the U.S. Parimutuel wagering in the USA is different than what the UK system is.

  2. It all depends on what track you are making your wager through.  To use US tracks and races for example, if you were to make that bet on the Kentucky Derby for example, you would see little change becuase of the fact that millions of dollars are wagered.  However, if you were to make that same wager on a Tuesday at a crappy track like Beulah Park in Ohio, where they don't have much money in their pools, your horse would be 1/9 (lowest posted race odds possible in the US) and would probably get back $2.10 if your horse were to win the race.

Now, if that was a show bet, that's the classic definition of bridge jumping to make race tracks in the US lose a lot of money, as they would have to pay 10 cents for every $2 bet.

  3. I think that might depend on the amount bet and the total amount bet on that race.

  4. 11-4 AND DEPENDS HOW MANY RUNNERS

  5. Nothing.

The odds in horse racing are determined by the horse's prior performances, the horse's current condition, and how the horse compares to other horse's in the same race.

The amounts of money bet on a horse after the odds have been established has nothing to do with it.
