How much does a tattoo apprenticeship usual cost? or can you just learn while working for a shop eventually?

depends on who you apprentice with.  ask around in your locality.  Some don't charge you but work you like an indentured servant for a set period of time.  But you still may be responsible for taking some classes (depends on your state--I know my state requires piercers to take some biology and health and hygiene classes, in addition to apprenticing for 3 to 5 years with an experienced piercer.  I don't know what they require for tattoo artists).  I know some shop owners want you to have first graduated from art school before you come to them.
