  1. Here in CA real Transitions from the Transitions company cost about $100 as an add on. Sun Sensors or other more generic companies are about half the price but most people sell them as Transitions, which is wrong. Real Transitions lenses block more uv and get darker outside and lighter inside. They do take from 13 to 15 minutes to lighten up completely once they are activated a couple of times.. The more they are used the faster they change...when they are new they take a bit more time until they are exercised.  Transitions lenses have scratch coatin and UV screan already in the lense and have a one year warranty from the manufacturer against scratching. Anything less is most likely NOT really a Transitions lense. I have all the photochangeable lenses available to me and prefer Transitions. I will sell the cheaper ones if the person wants them, but I do explain the differences. I sell Transitions all day. I sell the cheap ones about once a year. So, you do get what you pay for and it is hard to be a consumer and not know what the differences are, especially if the optician does not know the differences well them self.   You can check out the Transitions web site for yourself!

  2. one thing I wasn't aware of

when your in the car the tinted glass doesn't allow the glasses to get dark enough to be really effective.

or as dark as I would like

if you have a sun roof no worries

but you might want to get a true pair of RX sunglasses for daytime driving.

or buy one of those plastic shields that attach to the visor.

they get dark a lot faster than they get light again.

still better than having to carry 2 pairs or some magnetic clip

on that you have to take on and off.

  3. My frames/lens were $600, the transitions cost me an additional $30.

They take a few minutes to change; no where near as fast as the commercials imply.

  4. Depending on what types of lenses you use and where you go transition lenses can range from $25-50 extra. Some insurance providers cover them; other do not. Ask your insurance provider what they cover.

When I had them they worked really fast when you went outdoors, but then coming back inside it took 5-10 minutes to return to normal. That may or may not be too long for you, however it was very annoying with florescent lights.

  5. I have no idea what it costs(In South africa its around $25 added onto your basic lens price) but I can assure you it doesn't change back from its tinted state to its clear state nearly ask quickly as the ad's suggest. In the perfect conditions which is at about 20 degrees Celsius or 68 degrees Fahrenheit it takes between 30-40seconds to go to its maximum tinted state. Then coming back indoors it takes about 3-5minutes to go clear. You can add an anti-reflective coating to your lenses which will speed up the process to some extent. Transition lenses are made in Europe and that is their average temperature thus the maximum efficacy at the temperature.

You can also have a look at some generic products that works just as well as the transition. You are paying for a name brand remember that.
