It depends on the kind of practice (exotic, small animal, equine, specialist, emergency), the area you live in (rural or urban), whether you bought the practice from another vet or started on your own, whether you have partners in the practice and many other factors.  

Start-up costs are high and it takes time to build a new practice.  Young vets just out of school usually work for a practice for a time before buying in or going out and buying or setting up their own practice.
