How much does a waiter earn per hour in California?

I keep reading conflicting answers on different posts but I'm wondering how much a waiter makes per hour in CA. I know different restaurants pay different amounts but is there like a basic standard? Does a restaurant have to pay minimum wage plus tips? Isn't that required by law? Or do they set their own rate per hour plus tips? I've just applied to a few restaurants and am wondering.

  1. Minimum wage ($8.00) + tips. very simple, as of now that is the law. Of course they could pay you more than $8.00 per hour if they wanted to.

  2. about$10 an hour.

  3. I've located a local directory of restaurants that might help. You can drill down the California results by cities nearby to you. If you call nearby restaurants you can narrow down wich one would work best for you. http://www.restaurantreviewsratings.com/...

  4. yes, restaurants have to pay minimum and you keep tips. the pay they give you per hour varies among different restaurants. that you will have to ask the employer.

  5. I think most pay minimum knowing you'll be getting tips.  That is until you get some seniority then they'll raise it.  But the restaurant you're working at makes all the difference in the world

  6. They make about 11.21an hour, after 4 months it goes up to 11.65 after 6 months 12.01, then after a year 12.35. and making 15% per customers total amount. depends if customer isnt a rude person. just make sure your always nice and you ALWAYS ask if they need anything. dont make them wait.

  7. Several of the above answers are correct, but just to put a seal on it:

Servers in California must be paid at least minimum wage (currently $8 per hour).
