How much does a water heater cost?

Depends on where you purchase it and what you purchase. The price varies by hundreds of dollars, depending on what size and quality you purchase. Look at the one you have now, how many gallons is it? Is that sufficient to heat the water you use in your home? How long did that brand last?  You may just choose to go with something similar to what you already have. If you plan to install the water heater yourself, you could look at Home Depot, Menards, or Lowes... one of the major stores and price haggle! Just remember that venting a water heater could be tricky for a first timer and if it is a gas connection, you may not want to attempt installation if you have never done it before.

If you don't want to mess with it, call at least 3 qualified (check for licensing at the dept of commerce web site-google it) installers. Look under plumbing-get free estimates and go with what you can afford.

Be sure not to compare apples to oranges though- make sure they are all offering you the same product!
