  1. Really depends on how many classes you are teaching.  Many schools are now hiring adjunct professors, and usually they only make between $2k and $3k a class per semester.

  2. Not much?  Teaching pretty much never pays all that well, and it's mostly just liking the job that seems to be the draw.

To some extent, it's really going to depend on the school you're at.  If it's not particularly known for something related to English and the English department is mainly just there for meeting everyone's core education requirements. . . the $30k-$50k range is pretty likely.  You might be able to get something higher if you are at a better university for English (or if the cost of living is just higher there, of course); however, those jobs are also going to be a lot more competitive to get.

  3. I once had a tutor who was a professor had a masters, phD, and an english scholar. He charged about $160 an hour.

  4. As a professor...usually $58,000 or less. professors do not make a lot of money on average. Secondly, you usually have to apply to several places and may end up in a location that you don't necessarily like.

With that being stated, if you love English then by all means teach Bronte, Keats and Hemingway!

  5. Professors in general don't make a whole lot of money, especially considering how much it cost to actually get our degrees!

The amount varies on the type of college/university and the area.  But, the range from community college professors in low cost of living areas to tenured professors at fancy-shmancy places would probably be about $30,000 - $140,000 with the vast majority being in the $40,000-$60,000 range.

This is, by the way, assuming you can find a job as a professor.  Every time there is a job opening, there are hundreds of applicants, with PhDs, teaching experience, and a good scholarly record.
