I'm 18 and I really want to live on my own, even if it's a cheap crappy apartment to start out in until I finish college. About how much would an apartment cost? I live in Eastern Pennsylvania.

  5. $400-$4000

  6. You don't want cheap AND crappy my dear. Those are usually in ghetto areas which are simply not safe.

Let me break down costs for you:

1-bedroom/Studio - $500-900 (depending on where you live -- this could actually be lower or higher)

Utilities such as electric, gas, water - $50-200 (again, dependent on usage, area, cost of living)

    Groceries - $75-150

    Cable/internet - $50-120

    Renter's Insurance (if required) - $12-25/month

All other expenses - Up to $500

It is not cheap to live on your own and in an apartment. I believe it cost me around $1200 to live in a previous apartment and it'll be around $1500 to live in my new one. This is where learning to budget comes in very handy. If you can find something in a decent area for a good price, then you're in a good spot. Most complexes will require you to gross at least 2.5-3x the rent. For example:

If you earn $10/hour you are GROSSING (not netting) $1600 per month. Depending on where you live this can mean you can afford a moderate $650 studio or a really

crappy $400 studio. Do your research, ask questions, and calculate your budget out. It is hard work and requires you to be smart and on your toes but you can do it.

    Best of luck.
